In the ’s theory focussed on the need to modernise, to try to get third world countries to be more like developed countries by adopting our institutions and technologies. By the s, this approach was questioned with moves towards more appropriate technologies, that were more suitable to developing countries. Technology gives companies the competitive edge to strive and compete in the global world. It is integrated with every value adding activity of the company and helps in achieving these activities (Porter, ). Technology helps in improving and maintaining quality levels and competitive edge of .

Stimulus for the publication of an international resource book series was developed in , while teaching and researching various topics related to third world development. Since that time, I have built up a long list of related resource materials on different subjects, usually considered to be very important for researchers, educators, and. As their title suggests, Diwan and Livingston (who teach in American colleges) string together some very large subjects. They are at their best when showing that what makes technology "appropriate" depends on the aims of those in charge. Their analysis of conventional development (by now quite conventional itself) leads them to prefer alternative strategies.

A developing country's choice of an appropriate technology from among those available for use in a particular industry is critical: alternative technological strategies that involve varying mixes of capital, labor, and social costs could have significantly different impacts not only on the industry but also on the country itself, especially one whose industrial base is restricted.
